I'm more familiar with stock steps on Jeeps. When driving around something like a stump or rock outcropping they get hung up and bend or get pulled off their attachment points. If they aren't as low as the lowest point, that doesn't matter as much as you think. The less you have hanging lower the better.

Of course, if you're being a bit more careful and don't mind spotting smaller obstacles you may be just fine.
