Ray’s Winter Wonderland 2016 Recap
Over the February Family Day long weekend a brave group of our members tackled the trails at South Wind Motel & Campground for the first inaugural Ray’s Winter Wonderland. Why were they brave? Because there was an extreme cold weather alert and temperatures were around -30 degrees Celsius!
A total of 8 trucks with both drivers and passengers participated in the run. The registration cost to attend was four non-perishable food items per person attending. The food collected is being donated to the Minden Community Food Bank.
The group tried Sandy Trail on the Saturday and managed to complete half of the trail. The frigid temperatures made any recovery attempts a little difficult though and come Sunday the rest of the run had to be cancelled because the -40 degree night knocked out all but one truck. Frozen batteries, gelled oil, and tires that froze away from the rim unfortunately put an end to the weekend’s fun. A CAA truck that came to rescue one of the group’s Jeep even ended up getting stuck in the driveway because the tilt deck hydraulics stopped working due to the cold.
The group still had a great weekend and many plan on returning to the trails at a later date. Hopefully for next year’s Winter Wonderland the weather will be a little more cooperative!

I was supposed to go on Saturday but chickened out. Hope to get in a run at Ray’s before winter is over…
I was looking out for some winter events but never saw this surface – at least not on the events page. I guess I need to have been checking the community page – 🙂
